The Smashing Pumpkins are certainly not a band short of material. They very well may have set a record for non-album B-sides and repackaging, but they've never put out a full-length unplugged album. They've always put a few quiet numbers on their records ('Crush,' 'Farewell & Goodnight,' etc.), so fans knew of their acoustic prowess. Unplugged: 100% Pure Acoustic Performances collects versions of songs from Gish through Siamese Dream, some recorded in the studio and some in front of an audience. The Thin Lizzy cover 'Dancing in the Moonlight' is completely different from the original, stripped of its strutting funk and replaced by relaxed strumming. Some spacious slide guitar is added to 'Spaceboy,' while the bouncy groove of 'Blue' remains true to the original. There is some overlap on this release ('Landslide' is on Pisces Iscariot and 'Bye June' is from the Lull EP), but it still lives up to the task of compiling non-electric takes of Pumpkins favorites. And since the sound quality is excellent, this release should appeal not just to fans of the band, but to enthusiasts of well-played and crafted acoustic music.
